Heh, the oldest rules don't have steps, and that "dying at the end of a phase" thingie was a rule change that came with Revised (and was removed again with Sixth edition)

This allows you to deploy him much earlier than his base cost suggests, provided youve spent the early turns establishing a board of low-cost artifact creatures

On a personal note, multicolored uncommon are always my favorite cards in a set be it Enigma Drake, Reflector Mage, Cloudblazer, or the entire lineup of Dominarias legendary creatures
